Safely operate a school bus under all types of weather conditions including but not limited to fog, rain, hail, sleet, ice and snow. Transport students and other authorized persons over regular "to and from school" routes, and on field, extracurricular and special activity trips as authorized by the school district.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be 21 years old or older
- High school diploma or GED
- Have a minimum of three years driving experience
- Possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver’s license with appropriate endorsements (CDL-B with air restriction removed; passenger endorsement and “S” endorsement) Reimbursement will be provided for the cost of obtaining a CDL.
- Meet the physical and mental standards as set forth by the Department of Licensing necessary to perform duties, tasks, and responsibilities of a school bus driver
- Possess or be able to obtain and maintain a current First Aid/CPR card
- Take and pass a drug and alcohol test as required by the school district and federal requirements
- Sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students and all other students in evacuating an overturned bus
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Hearing sufficient to detect and distinguish traffic sounds from any direction outside the bus, such as horns, sirens, trains, etc. from a distance, which will allow adequate time for defensive or evasive action to avoid hazardous situations
- Sufficient command of the English language to communicate with students, parents, district staff members and other members of the public
- Successful completion of a fingerprint/background check
The Bus Driver Substitute at Pullman Public Schools is required to complete a bus driver training course and evaluation, and operate a school bus according to Washington State laws and district policies. Responsibilities include driving a scheduled route and supporting district-approved activities, both within and outside the district, operating and servicing bus equipment and accessories, and performing daily safety inspections. The driver must clean, inspect, and service the bus, maintain accurate records, and attend mandatory training sessions.
Additionally, the role involves performing basic first aid/CPR (training provided), maintaining control of student passengers for safety, and reporting unsafe acts or conditions. The substitute bus driver must work positively with a wide range of individuals, collaborate with colleagues, and handle multiple demands under pressure while maintaining high-quality work. Clear communication, confidentiality, professionalism, and the ability to work with minimal supervision and flexibility are essential.
Salary:
Trainee: $16.28 per hour; On-Call Driver & Regular Route Driver: $26.82 - $31.38 per hour
